The Destination Wedding Timeline You’ve Been Looking For

The easy part is over: you said yes and decided on a destination wedding. The next twelve months (or less) will be a whirlwind of planning, possible site visits, and fittings to create your perfect day. If it feels overwhelming, just take a deep breath: We have the perfect guide to help you stay on track from venue to veil.

12 Months Before Your Destination Wedding

A year out, make sure you lock in the venue and accommodations for yourself and your wedding party. You also need to ask your bridesmaids and groomsmen to block the date on their calendars. Now that you’ve selected a country, research the legal requirements to marry so there aren’t surprises when you apply for a license.  Your wedding planner can assist you.

9 Months Before Your Destination Wedding

If possible, schedule a trip to your destination to meet with the wedding planner and hold a tour. You also need to compile a list of recommended vendors — including your officiant — and meet with some of them on this trip. Back at home, start shopping for wedding attire.

If you live somewhere cold, you may need to buy your outfits in the summer in order to find lighter options.

6 Months Before Your Destination Wedding

Select your wedding colors and shop for invitation stationery. You need to mail your save the date cards at least six months back. Book your honeymoon and start shopping for bridesmaids and groomsmen attire.

You will also want to meet with your local hairdresser to talk about styles in case you need to grow out or dye your hair.

3 Months Before Your Destination Wedding

Mail your invitations and research activities around your destination for wedding party and family outings. Start the marriage license application process and talk with your officiant about pre-wedding counseling. Some priests require this before any ceremony.

The 90-day mark is also when the groom and his men should have their attire, and when your registry should be finished.

60 Days Before Your Destination Wedding

Finalize the headcount and seating plan, and assemble welcome bags and other goodies that you’re transporting. Make sure all of your vendors have a schedule of events, and the DJ has a playlist and a “Do Not Play” list. Confirm group activities and airport transportation for you and your guests. Most importantly, write your vows.

While most of these steps seem easy, it’s better to stay ahead of schedule so you can solve any problems you run into without derailing your whole plan.
