How to Plan for the ‘Free Wedding’ at an All-Inclusive Resort

Some of the all-inclusive resorts advertise “free” weddings. Is a free wedding the right choice for you, and if so, how should you plan for it? To help you decide, we’ve prepared a short guide.

Choosing a Free Wedding

Even free things come with hidden costs at times. Such is the case with some of the free all-inclusive resort weddings you’ll see advertised. Your ultimate cost depends on the type of celebration you choose, how long you stay at the resort, and the number of guests you bring along.

For example, at some resorts you’ll get a free basic wedding with your seven-night stay. A package might include:

  • A beautifully decorated gazebo for your ceremony
  • Wearable flowers for couple
  • A one-tier cake
  • The assistance of a personal wedding coordinator
  • A chilled bottle of wine
  • A framed wedding photo
  • Service from a wedding officer and a copy of the marriage license
  • Dinner reservations for four

Generally speaking, the longer you stay at an all-inclusive resort, the better the free wedding package. Bringing lots of guests can increase your clout, too, because you’re boosting the resort’s business. Book lots of rooms, and you just might earn some thank-you perks.

Upgrading Your Wedding

At many resorts you can upgrade a basic package to a premium package and receive options such as a two-tier cake, one hour of DJ service or steel band music, and a one-hour cocktail/hors d’oeuvre. For an additional cost, the some packages throw in floral centerpieces, an extra hour of DJ service, and a half-day tour of the island. Take some time and review all of the endless options for your custom wedding.

Making Your Plans

A free wedding is an enticing proposition, but most couples want more than these minimal packages provide. As you probably noticed, many free packages provide just enough cake and wine for the couple or maybe a few guests. Many packages (and packages like it) are an excellent value, but it’s significant to note that they do not include dinner, photography services, or hair and makeup assistance.

Extra frills and guests will add to your costs, but why not start with a basic package and tailor it with the upgrades you want? Many couples find that they ultimately spend less money on a destination wedding with 50 guests than they would on a 100-guest wedding back home. And, on any given day, chances are high that the weather is more glorious in your tropical destination of choice than just about anywhere else.
